Prime Minister Narendra Modi targets 90% immunisation against tuberculosis within a year

"I would like to announce that we have set aim to eradicate it from India five years ahead, by 2025", Modi said.

Targeting the previous governments, Modi said the immunisation programme had been going on for the last 30-35 years and despite that, the country could not achieve the target of complete coverage till 2014.

He said with the principle of "treat every TB patient best at the very first opportunity", the government was engaging private sector in its schemes and policies.

"To achieved "End TB" targets, the Government has rolled out new "National Strategic Plan (NSP) to end TB by 2025" which has been appreciated by the global community as a model plan for combating Tuberculosis", said Nadda.

Mr. Narendra Modi launched the Tuberculosis Free India campaign to take the activities of National Strategic Plan (NSP) in a mission towards eradicating the disease from the country, five years ahead of the globally set deadline. On the launch of major health mission by the Central government, PMO India tweeted, " A TB patient after successfully fighting against the disease can inspire many others. They are working in a smoke-free atmosphere, using clean energy."Mr Modi talked about world's biggest public health programme "Ayushman Bharat' and added " The aim is to create such an eco-system so that malnutrition is reduced."He stressed on use of Ayurvedic and Yoga with the mainstream medicines and stated that India was ready to work with all the countries in the world in this direction".

The Prime Minister said front-line workers played a crucial role in TB elimination along with the people who had demonstrated great courage in defeating this disease.

India has the highest burden of tuberculosis in the world-each year, 29 lakh new cases of TB are reported; 4.20 lakh people, mostly poor, are known to die of the disease.

The Prime Minister termed the Delhi summit a landmark event before the United Nations General Assembly in September this year as it is an important step for entire humanity.
