Shoe memorial represents thousands of victims of U.S. gun violence

7000 pairs of shoes on Capitol lawn to represent children lost to gun violence since Sandy Hook

There are 7000 pairs of shoes outside the Capitol. Here's why.

The memorial comes the day before the scheduled national student walkout to protest gun violence following the Parkland, Fla. high school shooting last month that killed 17 people.

Organizers say they wanted to bring the call for gun control to congress' doorstep.

In the shadow of the Capitol, an emotional tribute to child victims of gun violence took an unorthodox format: Thousands of shoes.

Celebrities were also among those who donated shoes, ABC reported.

About 1,300 people below the age of 18 are killed by gunfire in the United States every year, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Shortly after the Parkland shooting, the group set up a trio of billboards, near Marco Rubio's Florida headquarters.

The silent protest is meant to spur lawmakers to take action on gun reforms. The symbolic shoe demonstrations likely draw inspiration from the renowned memorial at the Hungarian Parliament in Budapest that honors lives lost during the Holocaust.
