Disney's Live-Action 'Mulan' Lands Gong Li, Jet Li

The Chinese actress Liu Yifei had previously been set to play the title role.

After first signing Niki Caro (Whale Rider) to direct back in February 2017, Disney's live-action Mulan is now finally moving towards a production start-date.

The live-action Mulan just got even more talent added to its cast, including the film's main villain. It has now been reported that she will be joined by martial arts superstar and Star Wars: Rogue One actor Donnie Yen.

Jet Li is in final negotiations to portray the Emperor of China who orders one male from each household to be conscripted into the military.

"Mulan" will join Disney's slate of successful live-action reboots, including "Maleficent", "Cinderella", "The Jungle Book", "Beauty and the Beast", and the upcoming "The Lion King" and "Dumbo". Gong Li, meanwhile, will play the film's villain, "a powerful witch".

The live-action movie will adapt the Chinese legends of Hua Mulan, the woman who disguised herself as a man to take her aging father's place in the Chinese Imperial army.

Disney's 1998 animated classic, featuring the voices of Ming-Na Wen alongside Eddie Murphy, Pat Morita, James Hong and B.D. Wong, earned €256.5 million worldwide as well as Golden Globe and Academy Award nominations. Tang has appeared in projects like Filthy Rich, The Letdown, and Dead Lucky.

Yen, 54, will play Mulan's mentor, Commander Tung mentor in the film.

Disney's Mulan is set to be released on March 27, 2020.
