Germany's Merkel backs air strikes on Syria as 'necessary and appropriate'

Merkel called the joint strike by the United States, Britain and France early Saturday as "necessary and appropriate", saying it will "preserve the effectiveness of the worldwide ban on the use of chemical weapons".

Germany will join France to push for a new worldwide effort to achieve a lasting ceasefire in Syria, German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said on Saturday according to a Retuers report, criticising Russian Federation for repeatedly blocking UN Security Council action on the war.

He said Germany is in touch with France on the chemical attack in the town of Douma in Eastern Ghouta, which killed 78 civilians and injured hundreds of others. The country often has restricted itself to supporting roles, such as the participation of a German refueling plane and Jordan-based reconnaissance jets in the current worldwide campaign against the Islamic State group.

Post-World War II Germany typically has been reluctant to engage in military action, and parliamentary approval is required for any military missions overseas.

"I think it is important to have a common line, without Germany participating militarily", Merkel said.
