Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections, especially in young children, the elderly and those with weakened immune systems.

At least 22 illnesses have been reported so far, the FDA said Friday.

Last month, the FDA said that it had learnt about a cluster of salmonella outbreaks in multiple states, and investigators worked with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and state authorities to trace the source of the illness.

Meanwhile, the FDA has reportedly urged consumers to check their purchases and avoid eating eggs that might be contaminated. Infected patients often recover without treatment, however, severe infection may require hospitalization.
