Salmonella can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections, especially in young children, the elderly and those with weakened immune systems.

At least 22 illnesses have been reported so far, the FDA said Friday.

Last month, the FDA said that it had learnt about a cluster of salmonella outbreaks in multiple states, and investigators worked with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and state authorities to trace the source of the illness.

The egg cartons needs to be labeled together with packing dates ranging throughout 102 from 011, with the plant range P-1065. Some of the eggs brands involved in the recall were distributed at Food Lion stores, Walmart Inc. and Waffle House restaurants, the AP reported. "FDA investigators then inspected the farm and collected samples for testing".

The farm produces 2.3 million eggs a day.

More than 200 million eggs distributed to restaurants and grocery stores in nine states have been recalled because of bacterial contamination.

The company, Rose Acre Farms of Seymour, Indiana, said in its alert that it had chosen to issue the recall "through an abundance of caution". The bacteria causes nausea, diarrhea and, in rare cases, death.

Meanwhile, the FDA has reportedly urged consumers to check their purchases and avoid eating eggs that might be contaminated. Infected patients often recover without treatment, however, severe infection may require hospitalization.

Did you buy eggs affected by this recall? "Consumers with these eggs shouldn't eat them", he said.
