The Thottapilly family - 41-year-old Sandeep, 38-year-old Soumya, 12-year-old Siddhant and 9-year-old Saachi - went missing while driving from Portland, Ore., to their home in the Los Angeles suburb of Santa Clarita.

Because of the storm, the river was too risky for search crews to get in the water until Tuesday, when conditions were deemed safe enough.

Mendocino County Sheriff Thomas Allman told a news conference that the body was found along the bank of Eel River about seven miles south of the spot where, the police suspect their auto went missing.

The vehicle itself and the four members of the Thottapilly family have not been recovered from the Eel River, which remains too risky for divers to enter, but searchers along the banks located numerous items consistent with a Honda vehicle and interior, and items consistent with a family traveling on vacation, the Mendocino County Sheriff's Office said in a statement.
They made headway over about 12 miles of river bank during two days of searching. It sank and vanished before rescuers reached the scene.

Crews Battle House Fire In Bordeaux

On Thursday, authorities concluded the vehicle was that of the Thottapilly family after recovering a number of personal items from the river. A piece of burgundy plastic, believed to be part of a side window, surfaced earlier this week, but the authorities were hesitant about saying whether it belonged to the family's Honda Pilot of the same color.
Relatives, who last heard from the family in the town of Klamath on April 5, reported them missing Sunday after they failed to show up for a scheduled visit in San Jose.
Sandeep grew up in Surat and was settled in the United States for the past 15 years.
