Kendrick Lamar Makes History Wins Pulitzer Prize For Music For “DAMN” Matthew Meadow

It's been a year and two days since Kendrick Lamar released his fourth album, Damn and the rapper is still making history with this project.

In an interview with Billboard, Dana Canedy, the Pulitzer Prize Administrator, explained that to determine a victor, the jury has to make a recommendation, which will be considered by the board. He described the prize as an "incredible honor" and said he was proud of the work "we all did at The Daily Progress".

The Pulitzer Prize is awarded for achievements in newspaper, magazine, online journalism, literature and musical composition in US.

It's a big news for rap music.

Clare Baldwin, Andrew R.C. Marshall and Manuel Mogato of Reuters won the worldwide reporting award for their coverage of Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte's deadly crackdown on drugs, and the news agency's photographers received the feature photography prize for their images of the plight of Rohingya refugees who have fled Myanmar. The Pulitzer board said Monday the album is a "virtuosic song collection" and said it captures "the modern African American life". He also won Best Rap Album at the 2018 Grammy Awards in addition to being nominated in Album of the Year category.

Ryan Kelly, a photographer who captured the moment a auto struck several people protesting against a white nationalist rally in Charlottesville on his last day of work for a Virginia newspaper won the Pulitzer Prize for breaking news photography. I [better] not ever hear one of you n****s speak with anything less than respect in your mouth for Kendrick Lamar.

With the Pulitzer, the 30-year-old from the historically deprived Los Angeles community of Compton joins the leagues of celebrated American composers such as Aaron Copland, Charles Ives and John Adams. "A lively and constructive conversation, but no dissent".

Special credit should also got to Daniel Tennenbaum, aka Bēkon, who worked on most of DAMN. alongside Kendrick to produce the album that continues to solidify the rapper's position in music history, allowing him to continue on his journey as an individual that stands out in a crowded and occasionally inane pop space.

More recently, Lamar took charge of the Black Panther soundtrack, including its lead single All The Stars with SZA.

The first journalism prizes were awarded in 1917, including one to the New York Tribune for an editorial on the first anniversary of the sinking of the Lusitania.

The multi-Grammy award-winning artist is the first to win the prestigious award from a non-classical or jazz category.

Mogato was also cited as a finalist for the Society of Publishers in Asia (SOPA) in 2013 for the coverage of Typhoon Haiyan, known as Super Typhoon Yolanda and in 2017 for the drugs war and the Human Rights Press awards for Duterte's drug war in 2017.
