The demand for special status for Andhra Pradesh has been getting more intense in the past few months | PTI

A delegation of MPs from the YSR Congress Party on Tuesday met President Ram Nath Kovind at Rashtrapati Bhavan in Delhi, seeking his intervention to push the Centre to grant special category status to Andhra Pradesh.

The bandh called by a people's forum Andhra Pradesh Pratyeka Hoda Saadhana Samiti found support from opposition parties.

While members of Left parties reportedly blocked the National Highway 16 which connects Kolkata and Chennai, ANI shared visuals where members of the Communist Party of India (Marxist) could be seen staging rasta roko. Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation buses will operate only till Andhra Pradesh state border due to the bandh.

Reacting to the shutdown call, Naidu said bandhs were not welcome as they hamper development. The strike has received support from YSR Congress Party, Congress and CPM, however, the ruling TDP has opposed it.

Asserting that he contested from Dhone against the families of stalwarts such as former Chief Minister K. Vijayabhaskar Reddy and Deputy Chief Minister K.E. Krishnamurthy on the advice of TDP founder N.T. Rama Rao and won as MLA for three terms, he said Mr. Naidu owed an explanation for insulting him. Congress and the Left parties backed the call for the bandh to fight for special status for Andhra Pradesh. He also alleged that the government had issued notices to those who had declared their support for the shutdown, warning them that cases may be booked against them.

Andhra Pradesh police have chose to beef up security across the state in the light of the day-long bandh being observed by the people's forum. Subsequently, TDP withdrew 2 ministers from the union cabinet and pulled out from the NDA coalition altogether.
