De Nysschen, 58, became president of Cadillac in August 2014 after stints as CEO of Nissan Motor Co.'s Infiniti brand and head of Audi's US business.

Cadillac abruptly fired company president Johan de Nysschen, 58, replacing him with Steve Carlisle, according to Automotive News.

"We appreciate Johan's efforts over the last four years in setting a stronger foundation for Cadillac", said GM president Dan Ammann in a press release. The company says the transition will begin right away. Cadillac global sales grew 15.5% last year to 356,457 units for the second-biggest sales year in its 115-year history. On the plus side, Cadillac has gained significant momentum in China, now the world's largest luxury vehicle market.

"It was a very bold move", de Nysschen told WardsAuto during an interview in Detroit earlier this year. That ranged from additions to its product portfolio to the decision to move Caddy from Detroit to New York City to give it more distance from the parent company and put it at the center of one of the country's biggest luxury vehicle markets.

General Motors has unexpectedly replaced the USA head of its Cadillac luxury brand, as it struggles to compete against German and Japanese luxury automakers in the U.S. Sales declined 8 percent previous year and dropped another 4.6 percent through March, leading to his ousting as Cadillac president. "It is paramount that we capitalize immediately on the opportunities that arise from this rate of change", Ammann said. He led a naming shift, starting with the flagship CT6 sedan. It gives Cadillac a powerful engine to compete with rivals at the upper end of the auto segment, but was a puzzling investment given the surge in electrification at premium global brands and given Cadillac's inability to compete with higher-volume, lower-displacement powertrains.

Under Carlisle, GM Canada enjoyed an outstanding 2017. The change at the top "will further accelerate our efforts in that regard", the statement quoted Mr. Amman as saying.

"The potential for Cadillac across the globe is incredible and I'm honored to be chosen to be a part of mapping that future", said Carlisle in a statement.

Unlike de Nysschen, his successor, Carlisle, has spent his entire career at GM.

Mr. Carlisle will be replaced after about 3.5 years on the job by Travis Hester, who will leave his job as vice-president of global product programs for GM.

According to GM, Carlisle led a resurgence of GM brands in Canada, where a year ago it was the top-seller of vehicles to individual retail buyers.
