Israel marks 70th anniversary of its founding

The anniversary of the proclamation of the state of Israel by founding father David Ben-Gurion began at sundown on Wednesday under the Hebrew calendar, but falls on May 14 according to the Western calendar.

Under the slogan "Your Independence Day is the day of our Nakba", they gathered in the town of Atlit, about 12 kilometres (seven miles) south of Haifa.

The six-week demonstration, which started on 30 March for Land Day and is set to end on Nakba Day on 15 May, calls for the return of the small coastal territory's 1.3 million refugees to their original villages.

The United Nations supported that right in a 1948 resolution, but it has never been implemented.

Later in the morning, hundreds of thousands of Israelis went celebrating in the beaches and parks, lighting barbecues and waving flags.

"I am an Arab, and I want to preserve my culture and identity regardless of the name of the country", said 21-year-old Wassal Kanana.
