Naidu has said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi who promised the special status to Andhra Pradesh during the 2014 Lok Sabha and Assembly polls has betrayed the people of the state, that is why he has chose to not celebrate his birthday.

Naidu's Dharma Porata Deeksha, or fight for justice, is being held at the Indira Gandhi Stadium in Vijayawada and will go on till 7 pm, The Times of India reported.

The Andhra Pradesh politicians have been protesting demanding SCS to Andhra Pradesh. However, the BJP-led Centre neither made any announcement in this regard nor made special provisions for the State when the fiscal budget for 2018-19 was presented in Parliament a couple of months back.

State ministers Kala Venkat Rao, D Umamaheswara Rao, Nara Lokesh, Kollu Ravindra, MPs and state legislators and leaders of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP) joined him in the fast at the massive programme organised by the state government. On Monday, Andhra Pradesh Pratyeka Hoda Saadhana Samiti had called for a state-wide bandh on the same issue, which was supported by most of the Opposition parties including YSR Congress (YSRC), Congress and Left parties.

The Chief Minister alleged that the Centre has constantly misled them with respect to Special Category Status.
