Walter Leroy Moody, scheduled to be executed at the William C.is seen in this undated Alabama Department of Corrections photo.

Although Moody was found guilty on scores of federal charges, his execution was punishment for a 1996 state court conviction for the murder of Judge Robert Vance Sr of the 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.

Alabama on Thursday ran an 83-year-old guy convicted of a deadly 1989 sequential bombing spree, which makes him the oldest known person put to death inside the modern era of US capital abuse.

Moody, who was 83, was put to death via lethal injection and was pronounced at 8:42 p.m. on Thursday night.

Moody was also convicted in the mail-bombing death of civil rights lawyer Robert Robinson of Savannah, Georgia, which occurred two days after Vance's.

Up until Thursday evening, John Nixon was the oldest prisoner executed when he was put to death at the age of 77 in December 2005 in Mississippi. Officials intercepted a device that was sent to the 11th Circuit's offices in Atlanta, as well as a bomb that was mailed to a Florida office of the NAACP.

The raids were ordered by the premier "because of the danger they [terrorists] pose to Iraqi territory", the statement said. However, the US-led coalition reportedly provided "intelligence" for Iraq's airstrikes on Thursday.

Moody has maintained he did not send the bombs that killed Vance and Robinson.

In last-hour appeals, Moody's lawyers had asked the US Supreme Court to stay his execution in order to review whether his federal sentence, which was handed down first, could be interrupted. They also argued that the aggravating factors used to impose a death sentence were improper.

Earlier, Moody's lawyer had unsuccessfully asked the Alabama Supreme Court to block the lethal injection arguing that an emergency medical technician who assessed Moody on Wednesday told the inmate he had "spider veins" and seemed concerned.

An 83-year-old inmate has been executed in Alabama. Alabama Attorney General Steve Marshall commented on the execution, saying that justice had been served in the case. Vance said he tossed the letter in the trash. On Thursday, the judge's son acknowledged that his father had expressed reservations about executions.

"Had my dad been murdered, I would want to know who had done it", Moody wrote.

The court is expected to rule later whether the execution plan can proceed. Moody, he added, fits the definition of a psychopath.
