Manaea, 26, cooled off a Red Sox team that had won eight in a row and 17 of 18. It was the seventh no-hitter since the Athletics moved to Oakland, and their first since Dallas Braden's flawless game in 2010.
The Red Sox has not had a no-hitter since 1993, when Chris Bosio of the Seattle Mariners held them hitless at the Kingdome. After Benintendi walked with two outs on a full count, Ramirez hit a grounder to Semien for an easy force play at second. After hitting a groundball to the right side, Andrew Benintendi got around the tag of first baseman Matt Olson and was called safe by home plate umpire Hunter Wendelstedt. There were two plays that came close to costing Manaea the no-hitter: 1) a pop-up in the fifth inning that hit a running Semien in the heel of the glove and popped out in shallow left field.
Manaea (3-2) had been battered by Boston in three previous starts, going 1-2 with a 13.50 ERA.
Manaea himself, however, is just the seventh Athletics pitcher (and third lefty) to toss a no-hitter.
Umpires ruled the play an error, keeping the no-no intact.

Stories like this can be hard to believe - dude, how do you not realize you're throwing a no-hitter?!? - but I totally buy it. Pitchers get so locked in on their game plan and so zoned in during starts that it can be easy to shift focus after the dropped popup and begin thinking about the next hitter.
"I've caught a lot of great pitchers in this game", A's catcher Jonathan Lucroy said. "It's a big league hit, and they don't grow on trees".
Until Saturday, the Red Sox had the second-longest streak without being no-hit in the majors, at 3,987 games... a record that was only eclipsed by the A's own streak.
