Ravens make last-gasp trade to pick Jackson

When Baltimore Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome finally got done dealing in the first round of the National Football League draft on Thursday night, he walked away with Louisville quarterback Lamar Jackson and sure-handed tight end Hayden Hurst.

It looked as it Jackson would have to wait until day two to hear his name called, but the Ravens traded two second-rounders - one in 2019 - and a fourth-rounder to the Super Bowl-champion Philadelphia Eagles to make Jackson their quarterback of the future. From the trade of Martavis Bryant to the Oakland Raiders for a third-round draft pick to Ryan Shazier walking out to the podium to announce the selection of safety Terrell Edmunds, it was quite a day. They selected Jackson, the 2016 Heisman victor who became the first player in NCAA history to post 3,000 passing yards and 1,000 rushing yards in back-to-back seasons.

General manager Ozzie Newsome must have sensed that as he maneuvered through the first round to position himself for the dramatic final pick that brought the Ravens Heisman Trophy quarterback Lamar Jackson.

"You can't make a lot of assumptions like that", Harbaugh said.

The last tight end the Ravens took in the first round was Todd Heap in 2001.

What is most telling about all of this is that the Ravens had moved back into the first round to get Jackson while he was still on the board. But we do some analytics and when the ball is in his hands, there hadn't been a better playmaker, really, in the last few years coming out [of the draft]. It was a dream scenario, where everything the Ravens could hope for lined up. The comparison is obvious, but Michael Vick in his prime is the closest thing that we've seen to what Lamar Jackson could be in the NFL. The first round will be Thursday night.

Jackson, humble as ever, chose not to go the Josh Rosen route and express any ill will towards the teams that passed on him, instead focusing on his happiness with the situation he now finds himself in. The Ravens worked the draft unlike any other team.

"What happened in that draft room was a masterpiece", coach John Harbaugh said. I saw many joke that he would still have Joe Flacco throwing to him.

"We added three wide receivers, now we've added a young tight end to the mix to continue to provide Joe some targets", said Newsome, an NFL Hall of Fame tight end.
