Every single village now has access to electricity: Narendra Modi

On Saturday, Leisang in Manipur became the last village to be added to the national power grid.

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Wuhan in China on April 27-28 for an informal summit with Chinese President Xi Jinping aiming to reset the relationship between India and China.

Gandhi tweeted attaching a news report that says Modi claims all Indian villages have been provided electricity connection. In his Independence Day speech in 2015, PM Narendra Modi promised electrification of all in-electrified villages within 1000 days. Around 97% of almost 6.5 lakh villages were already electrified by the time the Narendra Modi Government came to power, spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala said.

Analysts say the more important government goal is one that calls for every household to be connected to the grid by the end of 2018, even those that can not afford to pay for the necessary infrastructure to be installed.

One Twitter user, Jiwan Lal Rajput, pointed out that many villages near his home district in Jammu and Kashmir remained unelectrified. That means a majority are still a long way off from enjoying access to electricity, and that is hardly a cause for celebration. Today, all of the country's 597,464 census villages have been electrified.

The Congress claimed that the Government was taking "fake credit" for the feat.

Meanwhile, Congress further released figures which stated that India has 6,49,867 villages and it was Congress that connected 97 per cent with electricity. "Both sides share the view that the global landscape is undergoing profound changes, the relative power of countries is heading towards greater balance, and peace and development represent an irreversible trend". As of October, 36.8 million houses across India needed electricity; last week, government data showed that only 13 per cent of those houses had since been wired. Village Saprum, barely 90 km from Jamshedpur, Jharkhand, which even boasts a railway station - albeit 1.5 km away - has had poles without electricity for two years, and counting.

Access to electricity varies across the country as well.

Briefing the media about the meetings, Gokhale had also said that the two leaders also reviewed the relations between the two countries "from the strategic and long-term perspective".
