The former Manchester United manager, who won 38 trophies during 26 years at the club, remained in hospital yesterday after it emerged on Saturday evening that he was seriously ill in intensive care.

"I was devastated. I couldn't quite believe it".

All of us wish Ferguson the very best in his recovery.

"My wishes and prayers go to him and his family".

One expert, Dr Peter Hamlyn, said the football legend and father-of-three could make a full recovery but his progress will have to be monitored closely.

"He has been the biggest influence in my career, both on and off the pitch".

Current United defender Jones, one of a handful of players now at United who were signed by Ferguson, agreed, saying: "I know his character". I know he has that fight in him. They are the two players who are not available for tomorrow [Thursday]. "Hopefully, he'll recover well".
