According to the sheriff's office, four undercover narcotics deputies, whom Sheriff Joe Lopinto did not name but identified as white, were surveilling Robinson, a black man, as part of a drug-dealing investigation and followed him to a gas station on Jefferson Highway late last Thursday morning.

She credited Lopinto and Cvitanovich for being open about the autopsy results and the investigation. "I knew he just didn't die because the ozone was high". When the 22-year-old saw detectives at a gas station, he attempted to drive away, but crashed his auto. He abandoned his auto after crashing into two vehicles, then ran from deputies.

Four deputies caught up with him in the backyard of a nearby home, resulting in a physical struggle. The 22-year-old black man, who had a gun in the auto and was suspected of being in possession of heroin, was on the run from the police when he crashed his auto into two Sheriff's Office vehicle.
