Nord Stream ΙΙ vs U.S. shale gas: When Washington provokes Brussels

US Warns Of Sanctions Risk To Germany-Russia Gas Pipeline

US: Nord Stream raises intelligence concerns

US Assistant Secretary of State Sandra Oudkirk said that Washington could consider retaliatory measures within the framework of Countering America's Adversaries Through Sanctions Act.

As Washington has declared that it might introduce sanctions against the Nord Stream 2 pipeline, authorities in Berlin have said that such a move won't guarantee the growth of imports of liquefied gas from the US.

Earlier, Us officials said that the United Stats may impose sanctions on the companies involved in the implementation of the Nord Stream 2 project.

"That means that any pipeline project, and there are multiple pipeline projects in the world that are potentially covered, is at an elevated sanctions risk", Bloomberg cited Oudkirk as saying. We can understand this, and we are prepared to take effort to ensure this gas reaches Germany easier. Her comments came a day before German Chancellor Angela Merkel is due to fly to the Russian resort of Sochi for a meeting with Russia's President Vladimir Putin, at which the pipeline issue is expected to be a key topic of discussion. The length of the pipeline will be 1.2 thousand km, and the total capacity of the existing Nord stream - 55 billion cubic meters of gas.

Background: Russian natural gas company Gazprom has proposed building the pipeline, splitting the European Union between countries willing to work with Gazprom, such as Germany, and others, such as Poland, that are unwilling.

Oudkirk said Russian Federation could use the project to place monitoring and listening devices for surveillance under the Baltic Sea, which increases the risk of the pipeline from an intelligence and security point of view.
