The Hollywood producer was charged with rape, criminal sex conduct act, sex abuse, and sexual misconduct in relation to incidents involving two women, a New York Police Department spokesman told Business Insider.

A law enforcement official says Harvey Weinstein will face criminal sex act and rape charges in a NY court.

According to the BBC News, more than 70 women have accused Mr Weinstein of sexual misconduct although the charges relate to only two of them. Britain has no statute of limits on rape cases; some of the allegations under investigation there date to the 1980s. "Nothing about today's proceedings changes Mr Weinstein's position", Brafman said in a statement released to CBS News. He's scheduled to appear in court on July 30.

"Mr. Weinstein will enter a plea of not guilty", Brafman told reporters, adding that his client "has always maintained that any sexual activity he engaged in was consensual".

Weinstein is known for producing movies like Shakespeare In Love, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Shall We Dance? and Lion. The NYPD did the same, stating it "thanks these courageous survivors who have come forward". Evans, a former college student and aspiring actress, says she was forced to perform oral sex on Weinstein in 2004 despite repeatedly telling him "no". Meanwhile, separate investigations on sex crimes Weinstein was accused of committing in London and Los Angeles are now being conducted.

"Today Harvey Weinstein will take his first step on his inevitable descent to hell".

Once one of the biggest power centres in Hollywood for independent cinema, Weinstein had a spectacular fall from grace after a New York Times investigation unveiled his history of sexual misconduct. He must wear an ankle bracelet and can only travel within the NY or CT.
