'Solo: A Star Wars Story' box office disappoints

Coupled with the film's disappointing domestic launch, Solo will have a worldwide opening total of just $148 million, which is less than Rogue One's domestic opening weekend gross alone in 2016.

Compared with opening weekends from past year, "Solo" has a lower three day gross than "Justice League" (a major disappointment despite grossing $93.8 million), and the R-rated X-Men entry "Logan", which grossed $88.4 million.

This number would put it behind Rogue One's $155 million opening weekend and way behind the opening weekends of The Last Jedi and The Force Awakens.

Solo: A Star Wars Story is directed by Ron Howard, who took over for the original directors, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, after they were let go with just a few weeks left of filming due to creative differences with Lucasfilm.

According to Exhibitor Relations, the three-day total for Solo is estimated to be $83 million domestically.

"Solo" also opened to disappointing weekend sales in the US and Canada, a rare slip for a movie studio that has dominated the box office for nearly three years with serial-type adventures.

No Filipino casualties in Oman due to Cyclone Mekunu - DFA
A holiday destination, Salalah's empty beaches were strewn with debris and trash while churning waves inundated unprotected areas. Five inches of rain is expected in southwest Oman , far eastern Yemen, and southeast Saudi Arabia through Sunday, May 27.

Early estimates placed the second Star Wars spinoff at somewhere in the region of $114 million in the United States, however Variety is now reporting that its take over the past three days is at $84 million with a four-day total expected at $101 million.

The movie started out strong with $14.1 million in Thursday previews, a record for Memorial Day weekend. From Solo's ending, it's also apparent that Lucasfilm had planned more installments in the story of the scruffy-looking scoundrel. Projections for the Memorial Day box office weekend have fallen from $130 million pre-weekend to close to dropping under $100 million on Sunday.

It's a lot to ask of Star Wars fans to maintain the same level of excitement across that many Parsecs. What most hurt "Solo" was the "fatigue factor" of a May "Star Wars" film following a December one, said Paul Dergarabedian, senior media analyst for comScore.

"Star Wars is still a gold standard brand for movie franchises", said Dergarabedian. The character, who debuted in Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back and returned in Episode VI - Return of the Jedi, was first brought to life by the equally charming Billy Dee Williams.

The "Solo" three-day is also falling below another film that underperformed relative to its franchise pedigree: "Justice League".
