The death toll from Nipah virus rose to 16 with two more deaths reported in the last two days in Kerala's Kozhikode.

State Health Minister KK Shailaja complimented the medical teams of the Centre, state and the private sectors for effectively containing the outbreak.

All the people put under quarantine are advised to keep a check on their health at all times and inform health officers if any symptom breaks out. "It is expected to reach us by Friday", he said.

On the other hand, deputy commissioner of Kamrup (Metro), Virendra Mittal, told G Plus that the health department has been given the responsibility to take the needed precautions and to communicate it across to reach people. As Nipah virus encephalitis can be transmitted from person to person, standard infection control practices and proper barrier nursing techniques are important in preventing hospital-acquired infections.

The two confirmed Nipah Virus cases, who have been under treatment, have also been responding well to the antiviral drug Ribavirin so far, said officials.

Seenu Prasad, who hails from Kerala and posted at the Eastern Command headquarters Fort William, was admitted to the Command Hospital here on May 20 and passed away on May 25, the spokesman said. Throats and nasal swabs, brain fluid, urine and blood should be tested in early stages of the disease, but only in highly suspected cases. He said that these will be administered only if any fresh Nipah case will be reported, as quoted by news agency PTI.
