Val Kilmer Returning for 'Top Gun: Maverick'

Top Gun: Maverick will feature a plot that finds the pilots battling with new technology.

Top Gun: Maverick is continuing to take shape.

Val Kilmer will return to the skies as Tom "Iceman" Kazansky in the Tom Cruise-starring Top Gun sequel, according to a report by The Wrap.

Cruise is reuniting with Oblivion director Joseph Kosinski who is set to direct the project from a script by Eric Singer (American Hustle). Still no word yet on whether original stars Kelly McGillis, Tom Skerritt, Meg Ryan, Tim Robbins, or Michael Ironside will be included in the cast.

Top Gun followed Maverick and Nick "Goose" Bradshaw (Anthony Edwards) as they are given a chance to train at the Navy's Fighter Weapons School (aka Top Gun) at the former Naval Air Station (NAS) Miramar in San Diego.

Paramount declined to comment on the news.

Top Gun: Maverick will be out in theaters on July 12, 2019. But if you're looking for some more returning names from the first film, Harold Faltermeyer is composing the score and will hopefully be bringing a large helping of nostalgia.
