"We don't know how developed North Korea's secure communications capabilities are, so whether Kim Jong Un will be within easy reach of his National Command Authority during his stay in Singapore is an open question", said Andrew O'Neil, a North Korea nuclear policy expert at Griffith University in Queensland, Australia. It will be the first time a sitting USA president has met with a North Korean leader.

Trump arrived in Singapore after another meeting with foreign leaders - a group of close American allies. Kim is hoping Trump will relieve the economic sanctions that have crippled the North Korean economy.

Those points were echoed in Monday's media coverage in North Korea, which stressed that the talks with Trump would focus on forging a relationship more in tune with what was described as changing times - most likely meaning the North's new status as a nuclear-armed state - and its desire for a mechanism to ensure lasting peace on the Korean Peninsula and, finally, denuclearisation.

White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said Trump spent his flight from Canada to Singapore "meeting with his staff, reading materials and preparing for his meetings in Singapore".

Kim toured Singapore's nightlife on Monday evening.

It "would instead lay out practical steps with requisite commitments from North Korea that demonstrate that it understands, accepts and is committed to achieving denuclearisation as the U.S. defines it", said Enos, who is also in Singapore to watch the proceedings.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said on Monday the "ultimate objective" of a historic summit with North Korea had not changed and the United States was "eager to see" if North Korea was honest about denuclearization.

"The senior officials of the party and government sincerely wished Kim Jong Un good successes in the first summit meeting and talks between the DPRK and the USA and his safe return", the KCNA said.

It is unclear, however, under what terms North Korea would agree to in an effort to reduce its nuclear arsenal. While Kim is staying at the St Regis Hotel that has been converted into a fortress ahead of June 12, Trump is reportedly staying at Shangri-La Hotel.

"The entire world is focusing on the historic summit between the DPRK (North Korea) and the United States, and thanks to your honest efforts".

Iran said North Korea should be wary of negotiating with Mr Trump following his withdrawal from the landmark 2015 nuclear agreement.

"If I think it won't happen, I'm not going to waste my time", he said.

Mr Kim, who is the chairman of the State Affairs Commission of North Korea, headed to the Istana on Sunday where he met Mr Lee for the first time.
