Tesla Autopilot update to include first 'full self-driving features'

Tesla's website now features a section on the Autopilot page called, "Full Self-Driving Capability".

"With V9, we will begin to enable full self-driving features", the 46-year-old executive said in response to a tweet highlighting the issues with the present Autopilot system.

Elon Musk says Tesla's upcoming supercar will fly, possibly in a literal way.

In another fatal accident past year, Tesla's Autopilot failed to detect a truck crossing the road, but investigators pointed out the driver was watching a movie at the time and not paying attention with the semi-autonomous system in operation. Autopilot resources, he said, had so far "rightly focused entirely on safety".

But proponents were quick to celebrate Musk's promised upgrade, with Tesla stock surging in after-hours trading.

Musk has said the new Roadster's intention is to prove an electric auto can outperform high-end gas-powered cars on any performance metric. The version 9 update will be pushed out over-the-air to Tesla owners.

While Tesla is selling a full self-driving package, that does not mean that consumers will be able to use it immediately.

In blog posts released by Tesla following the accident in March, the manufacturer said the condition of the attenuator was "the reason the crash was so severe".

Elon Musk has tweeted about the possibility of rocket thrusters for extra boost for the Roadster and knowing what he is capable of, it might turn out to be a reality.

"SpaceX option package for new Tesla Roadster will include ~10 small rocket thrusters arranged seamlessly around vehicle", Musk wrote. Speaking on Twitter, he confirmed that the rockets would actually be powered by SpaceX technology and would result in the Tesla Roadster's rear seats being removed to allow for the technology to fit.

On Saturday, Musk said the package will include around 10 small rocket thrusters that will improve the vehicle's acceleration, maximum speed, braking, and handling. One video recorded last week shows an official Tesla vehicle speeding along a California freeway while its driver is facing down, seemingly not paying attention or falling asleep.
