The United 2026 joint bid from the United States, Canada and Mexico has won the right to host the 2026 Fifa World Cup after Fifa's member associations met at the Fifa Congress in Moscow ahead of the kick-off of Russian Federation 2018. Questions instantly turned to the field, with many casual observers wondering whether the USA will automatically qualify for the tournament.

"Hosting a FIFA World CupTM is an extraordinary honor and privilege", said Steven Reed, President of Canada Soccer and Co‚ÄźChair of the United Bid. Several hotels around the metro would host teams and FIFA VIPs during the tournament.

Host nations have automatically qualified for every World Cup from 1930 through 2022, but 2026 represents the first time three nations will stage FIFA's showcase event. US will regroup in the coming years and attempt to clinch a spot in the 2022 World Cup in Qatar before turning its attention to home pursuits. Local leaders Chiefs President Mark Donovan, Sporting Kansas City President and CEO Jake Reid, Mayor Sly James of Kansas City, Mo., and Mayor David Alvey of Kansas City, Kan., are hosting a news conference, and may discuss the possibility that the Kansas City metro could host a match.

The U.S., Canada and Mexico will discover Wednesday whether their joint bid to host soccer's World Cup in 2026 has been successful.

Canada's men's team has not played in the World Cup since 1986 but traditionally, host countries do get to play. The US, Mexico and Canada received 134 votes (67 percent) with the Morocco bid earning 65 votes.

"It just made a lot of sense to accommodate and expand a tournament have all three countries host and really kind of spread the football love all around North America", Shanks added.
