Authorities respond to the scene of a police shooting in Sherman Oaks

After the initial exchange of gunfire, the suspect barricaded himself inside his home, according to police.

The man, said to be in his mid-20s, shot at the officers after his mother called the authorities and said her son was "acting erratically", Los Angeles' KABC-TV reported, citing authorities. SWAT officers found Honeycutt unresponsive when they entered the residence, the department tweeted early Saturday.

In 2013 he left the USA to play for Israeli team Ironi Nes Ziona, followed by BC Khimki in 2014. The LAPD says Honeycutt appears to have suffered self-inflicted wounds.

Tyler Honeycutt once had a bright future as a budding star at UCLA, but it never really translated into the National Basketball Association. The area around the residence, including at least 30 people, was evacuated.

The LAPD responded to a call Friday night about a man with a gun outside of a residence and, upon arrival, the suspect shot at them, said LAPD spokesperson Tony Im. He was declared dead at the scene by the fire department.

The victim was identified as 27-year-old Tyler Honeycutt, according to TMZ. After only suiting up 24 games in two combined years, Tyler continued his basketball career overseas, winning the elusive EuroBasket championship with Russian club BC Khimki.

In February 2013, the small forward was part of a six-player trade that also sent Thomas Robinson and Francisco Garcia to the Houston Rockets for Patrick Patterson, Cole Aldrich and Toney Douglas. Mr. Honeycutt moved to Efes in Istanbul for the 2016-17 season before returning to Khimki during the last one.
