Carmen Cincotti competes against Joey Chestnut during the 2017 Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest

Both Chestnut and Sudo will take home a 10,000 US dollars first-place prize.

The second place was seated by Carmen Cincotti with 64 hot dogs, while Darron Breeden came third with 43 hot dogs.

It took Brooklyn district attorney Eric Gonzalez stepping in and verifying the totals to settle things, and nab both winners their $10k grand prizes. Sudo has plans to enter this year's competition as well.

Here's hoping ESPN breaks out another Sport Science segment on hot dog eating this year.

The heat wasn't a factor; the National Weather Service put the temperature at 83 degrees with a heat index of 91 degrees.

However, Sudo displayed her prowess by eating 41 hot dogs and buns a year ago, and remains a heavy -550 favorite against the field to successfully defend her title Wednesday afternoon. "To eat hot dogs competitively", according to René, "I like to split them - take the hot dogs out of the buns - try to eat the hot dog as quickly while I am dunking the bun".

For many people around the nation, Fourth of July means freedom, barbecues, patriotism and Coney Island's Nathan's Famous Hot Dog Eating Contest. Back then, victor Jason Schechter finished off 14 hot dogs to claim the title of champion, a fraction of what today's competitors manage to finish.

Manual counts initially found that Joey Chestnut, the men's champion, had eaten 64 hot dogs, rather than the world record-breaking 74 hot dogs that he actually consumed. Since then, he's been absolutely dominant, winning 11 of the past 12 competitions.

Miki Sudo (MIHK'-ee SOO'-doh) is seeking a fifth women's title in a row.

Michelle Lesco, 34, of Tucson, Ariz., finished second with 27, one better than Sonja "The Black Widow" Thomas, 51, of Alexandria, Va., who owns the record with 45 and has won the three other women's titles.

Sudo downed 41 franks and buns a year ago.

Last year, animal rights activists tried to unfold a banner amid the crowd at the event. Over the decades, it's become a major event: tens of thousands of spectators gather to watch the food battle go down, in which dozens of competitors stuff their faces as rapidly as possible with processed meat and buns.
