'Ant-Man and the Wasp' marks Marvel's 20th straight No. 1 opening

It had no problem fending off the weekend's other major release, The First Purge. Not only did Ant-Man And The Wasp debut this weekend with an impressive $76 million, but Incredibles 2 retained its number two spot at the box office, causing Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom to slip to number three after being at the number one spot for the last two weeks.

Hence why Ant-Man and the Wasp opening less like a box office event is slightly underwhelming, especially given that this was the superhero movie that was supposed to most get a boost from post-Avengers hype.

The Incredibles 2 earned enough to score a second place spot at the box office this weekend, where it pulled in $29 million. Future openings include a July 18 release in France followed by Germany (7/26), United Kingdom (8/2), Italy (8/14) and Japan (8/31).

Ant-Man and the Wasp will most certainly be on track to exceed the $180.2 million domestic, $339.1 million foreign and $519.3 million worldwide marks put up by the original Ant-Man, likely topping out between $250 million and $300 million domestic and $700 million and $750 million worldwide. This makes Incredibles 2 the first animated movie to ever top $500 million, which, of course, makes it the highest grossing animated title ever. Top holdover markets include China ($48.7 million), Mexico ($33.8 million), Australia ($24.6 million), and Brazil ($15.4 million). Over the next few weeks, rollout continues in Korea, Japan, Spain, Italy, and Germany.

With the release of Ant-Man and the Wasp, Marvel Studios now has their 20th movie that has opened in the #1 spot at the box office.

Universal and Amblin Entertainment's "Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom" scored $27.6 million from 86 worldwide territories. The studio has had a string of box office hits in 2018 with Avengers: Infinity War racking up over US$2 billion and counting, and Black Panther passing US$1.3 billion globally.

In fourth we find Universal and Blumhouse's The First Purge, which debuted on Wednesday and finished with an estimated $17.1 million for the three-day for a five-day opening totaling $31 million. "It's the fourth in a franchise that they happen to keep very relevant", he said.

It also speaks to audiences. The film saw a 53 percent decrease in ticket sales when compared to last weekend, but is still bringing people to the movies to check out the dinosaurs and pump their fists. This is a notably strong performance given the impact of England's World Cup Quarter-Final game. Upcoming key markets include a July 20 release in Mexico, August 2 release in Russian Federation and a late, December 6 release in Brazil.
