Canada's national forecaster says the Maritimes could be in the path of a tropical storm that formed off the USA coast Sunday morning.
The National Hurricane Center said the storm was about 215 miles south-southeast of Cape Hatteras, NC, in its 5 p.m. ET report. As sunshine-filled days draw folks to the beach, expect rough surf, strong rip currents, longshore currents and steep waves from tropical storm Chris, the NWS warned Monday. La Desirade Island near Guadeloupe recently reported a sustained wind of 35 miles per hour (57 km/h) and a wind gust of 46 miles per hour (78 km/h).
Chris is expected to begin moving late Tuesday to the northeast and pick up speed Wednesday and Thursday, the center said.
Chris will continue to linger off of the NC coast on Tuesday. Gov. Ricardo Rossello urged people without sturdy roofs to move in with relatives or to one of 24 government shelters.

The most recent named storm Chris was Hurricane Chris in 2012. It said winds would fall below gale force during the night, but people on area islands should be alert for possible heavy rain that could cause flooding or mudslides.
The hurricane center cautioned those along the coast to keep an eye on Chris but think its worst weather will stay offshore.
