As a prequel series set a decade before the original '60s Star Trek, the new season of Discovery will be able to brush up against canon that Trekkies and Trekkers are very familiar with. The change could be partly due to a behind-the-scene shakeup on show, since Alex Kurtzman has taken over as showrunner from Aaron Harberts and Gretchen J. Berg on the new season. She would later go on to have roles in later Star Trek shows and films as well.

In addition to Martin-Green, Season 2 will include returning cast members Doug Jones (Saru), Shazad Latif (Ash Tyler), Anthony Rapp (Paul Stamets), and Mary Wiseman (Sylvia Tilly).

"CBS has also allowed us the great pleasure of reintroducing the world of Star Trek audiences new and old".

Following the surprise hit of the first season of Star Trek: Discovery, CBS All Access announced at Comic Con on Friday that it has ordered a short-form spin-off entitled Short Treks that will debut in the fall.

This was teased during the final moments of Season 1, where the Discovery was being hailed by Captain Pike. In this place in the Star Trek timeline, young Spock is the science officer who serves under Captain Christopher Pike on the iconic ship.

The trailer also offered a first look at the show's spiffy throwback uniforms, with Pike's uniform giving fans a flashback to the gold shirts of the original series. Also of note is an appearance by one of my favorite comedians, Tig Notaro.

The role was originally played by Majel Barrett Roddenberry.
