Supergirl Adds Fan-Favorite Legionnaire as TV's First Transgender Superhero

Nicole Maines

Activist Nicole Maines will star on ‘Supergirl’ as TV’s first trans superhero

Nia Nal, a.k.a., Dreamer, is a transgender superhero played by Maines - herself a transgender woman. Introduced in 1964 in Adventure Comics #317, Dream Girl comes from the planet Naltor, where most of the inhabitants possess precognitive abilities, in which they experience visions of the future through dreams.

Maines appeared in the HBO documentary The Trans List, and guest starred on the USA Network series Royal Pains in 2015.

Though the new star seems confident about her role, she still feels the weight of responsibility.

Maines hopes her role in the DC show will provide a positive impact and the "right representation" for the trans community. Over the course of the season, Nal will be coming into her own as a superhero.

"We've had trans representation in television for a while but it hasn't been the right representation".

"A$3 lot of different shows have been really eager to tell the stories of transgender people, especially transgender youth because it's just such an important issue right now in our society and the world", she said. And so having trans people play trans roles shows that we are valid in our identity and we deserve to exist as we do. Nal will become the 10th major LGBTQ character in the CW's Arrowverse, following news that Batwoman debuts on Arrow later this year.

Maines explained that part of the problem with casting cis actors in trans roles is that it could lend credence to "harmful rhetoric" about trans people.

"I think we're in a time right now where more than ever representation in the media matters", says Maines, referencing the recent controversy surrounding Scarlett Johansson being cast as a trans man in Rub & Tug. April Parker Jones (If Loving You Is Wrong, Jericho, The Last Ship) is set to play Colonel Haley, a "hardline career military woman" who is fiercely dedicated to her country and loyal to a fault to her commanding officers. David Ajala plays Manchester Black, "the type of guy who brings a knife to a gunfight and still walks away the victor".
