How To Watch The Longest Lunar Eclipse Of The Century

A rare total lunar eclipse - expected to be the longest in the 21st century - is set to take place on Friday that will see the Earth's natural satellite turn blood red.

What a lunar eclipse can look like. This can occur only when the Sun, Earth, and the Moon are aligned exactly or very closely so, with the planet in between.

Slooh will broadcast the entire lunar eclipse on its YouTube channel, which should go live at 1:00 p.m. EDT (17:00 UT).

People across the country -weather permitting - will be able to view a rare celestial event called a selenelion this morning.

Check this page closer to 3 p.m. Friday for a look at how the world is viewing the lunar eclipse.

Along with the Blood Moon, Mars will also be seen shining brighter.

The website will have live footage of the blood moon on Friday and Saturday. While the full eclipse will be over 6 hours, the total lunar eclipse 2018 will last for 1 hour and 43 minutes. Because of gravitational influences and the tilt of the planets' orbits, Mars sometimes comes even closer than usual to Earth - the 2003 opposition was the closest pass in almost 60,000 years.

Rio de Janeiro's spectators cheered when the blood moon emerged from the fog.

The Bible contains references to the moon turning blood and some ultra-Orthodox Jews consider lunar eclipses ominous and a cause for moral contemplation.

In Auckland, the eclipse will still be partial as the moon disappeared below the horizon. "At most perihelic oppositions, including this one, the planet retreats to the belly of the ecliptic low in the southern sky".

A partial eclipse will follow this, with a shadow of the Earth slowly retreating across the lunar surface until around 11.20pm.

You can see the lunar eclipse across most of the world.

You won't need a telescope or special equipment to see the Moon like you would with a solar eclipse.

Not all the lunar eclipses will lead to a "bloody" show. The longer and wider the shadow, the longer it takes the Moon to pass through it.

The eclipse will not be visible to residents of the United States as by the time the moon rises at night in the U.S., it will have already completed its journey through Earth's shadow, or Umbra.

This eclipse will be visible from Europe, Russia, Africa, the Middle East, much of Asia and Australia. At 4:58 am, the penumbral eclipse will end.

While Mars may not be immediately visible without the right equipment, nonetheless, it would be an exciting opportunity to view the bright red planet right next to the red (eclipsed) Moon on that night.
