The powerful natural disaster struck the popular resort island of Lombok Indonesia and was felt on Bali, just to the west of the Island according to Indonesia's national Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency.
Lombok, a volcanic island that towers over the flatter Gilis, bore the brunt of yesterday's quake, with the vast majority of deaths occurring there.
It was also felt in Sumbawa Island, to the east of Lombok according to Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, a spokesman for Indonesia's National Disaster Management Board; twelve aftershocks followed the quake. In several districts, more than half the homes were destroyed or severely damaged.
Travellers at the global airports in Lombok and Bali were thrown into panic and there was minor damage to the buildings but operations were not disrupted, officials said.
Numerous injured are being treated outside health centers and hospitals due to structural damage to these buildings.
Australia's Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton says he was "very lucky" to escape a deadly quake on the Indonesian island of Lombok unharmed.
Two days after the quake, rescuers were still struggling to reach all the affected areas and authorities expected the death toll to rise.
"We were sitting there having dinner at about 7 o'clock last night, we just felt a really big sort of shaking and the lights went off and everyone just ran", Australian tourist Kim Liebelt said as he waited with other travellers for a flight out at Lombok's worldwide airport.
