European Tour pays wrong Tommy Fleetwod £120,000 Open winnings

Tommy Fleetwood was paid more than US$150,000 (RM611,000) in prize money from last month's Open Championship.

Greg Thorner, one of Florida pro Tommy Fleetwood's friends, posted a picture of a Wells Fargo account summary to his Twitter account Wednesday.

Fleetwood has four European Tour titles to his name, and finished second at the US Open in June. Having grown up sharing a name with my dad, I can confirm that; I once dropped off a hardware store check at the bank only to realize that rather than depositing it into my checking account, the kindly old teller had instead somehow re-opened a years-old child's account in my brother's name that had my dad's name on it as a signatory. That's when I realised it must be the other Tommy Fleetwood.

'He got on to his bank immediately and they didn't know what to say. The European Tour had his bank details as he played some Challenger Tour events years back.

Tommy Fleetwood was paid $154,500 (£120,000) for his tied 12th-place finish at The Open - the only problem being it was sent to the wrong Tommy Fleetwood.

And I want to see them win the title, but I fear it's going to be very hard for that to happen this season. It's certainly an exciting and tone-setting opening fixture for both the Red Devils and the Foxes.

Caddie Fleetwood told Reuters he was trying to get in touch with English world No.11 to put the player's mind at ease that the money would be refunded.

It may have been easy to miss for the more accomplished Fleetwood, whose career earnings are listed at $20.32 million on the European Tour's website.

Fleetwood, who begins his PGA Championship bid at Bellerive on Thursday, said: "It looks pretty genuine".

"I tried to get on their senior tour, so they have my (bank) information", he said.

"It was only for $14 or something but he called it up and looked at his statement, and that's when he shouted 'Holy smoke, I've just had US$154,000 paid into my account!'"
