Jose Mourinho: Man Utd boss 'not confident' of deadline day signing

The new Premier League season kicks off later on Friday with Manchester United, runners-up in the last campaign, taking on 2015/16 champions Leicester City at Old Trafford.

In late July the Portuguese said he was confident of getting at least one more signing through the door, but hopes have faded as Thursday's 5pm deadline edged closer.

Mourinho faced the press ahead of tomorrow's season opener against Leicester City, though the major topic of information was whether or not United would strengthen their squad.

'My view is that first of all it's hard for me to believe we finished second, ' said Mourinho of last season.

"We have only seen him when he has appeared in front of the TV cameras this summer and heard what he has told the media, and I suspect he will behave very differently on the training ground with his players".

"I focus on just what we have, and we go with everything we have to the first match". As it stands, Alderweireld and Maguire are considered too expensive, while Bayern Munich have knocked back a loan move for Boateng.

Manchester United were allegedly ready to pay as much as £100m for Real Madrid defender Raphael Varane before the end of the summer transfer window.

The extension sees the Premier League rights remain on BeIN's roster of European soccer broadcast rights - which includes the top tiers in Spain, Italy, Germany and France as well as the Uefa Champions League and Uefa Europa League - in the run-up to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

"They returned on Monday", he said.

Sticking with the narrative that his squad depth was not enough given the number of players who needed a post-World Cup vacation, Mourinho applauded his short-handed Red Devils.

"The net expenditure is a record as it stands but you'd think with three weeks left for European clubs to buy Premier League players, and Premier League clubs by the looks of it not having done their selling yet, it might not stay that way". I was told that during pre-season it looked like I was saying something absolutely out of order, something insane. Martial in the last 20 minutes could have given us the second goal but I couldn't make that change.
