Gunman Charged in 'Stand Your Ground' Florida Shooting

Drejka, who is white, told local police he shot McGlockton, who is black, out of fear for his life.

McGlockton's girlfriend said Drejka confronted her as she sat in the couple's vehicle with two of their children because she was parked in a handicapped-accessible space. As of Monday afternoon, Drejka was being held on a $100,000 bond.

"My decision not to arrest is merely doing what Florida law compels", Gualtieri said at the time.

McGlockton's girlfriend, Britany Jacobs, who was seated in the couple's vehicle with two of their children, a three-year-old and a four-month-old, said Drejka confronted her for being parked in a handicapped-accessible space. The case was sent to the state attorney's office for further review.

On Monday, prosecutors charged 47-year-old Michael Drejka in the death of 28-year-old Markeis McGlockton.

Footage of the shooting was recorded on CCTV outside the convenience store and shows Mr McGlockton rushing back inside the building while clutching his chest. "Today's decision is another example why Florida's broken "stand your ground" law must be repealed so that justice in this case and every other tragedy can never be delayed or denied".

According to the arrest warrant, viewed by the Times, police noted Mr McGlockton had immediately stepped back "when confronted with the firearm" and turned away from Mr Drejka.

Michael Drejka, 48, was taken into custody on Monday for the shooting of Markeis McGlockton, the Pinellas county sheriff's office said in a statement.

Britany Jacobs, 25, her 5-year-old son Markeis McGlockton Jr., and their cousin Mesha Gilbert, 26, during a vigil for Markeis McGlockton Sr., 28, at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church in Clearwater, Fla., July 22, 2018.

"My first thought on hearing this news was: it's about time", said the civil rights attorney Benjamin Crump, who is representing Jacobs and has challenged SYG as a get-out-of-jail-free card that is applied in racially discriminatory ways. "If you're outraged by the law and don't like the law, then change it". "This self-appointed wannabe cop attempted to hide behind "Stand Your Ground" to defend his indefensible actions, but the truth has finally cut through the noise".

Gualtieri's initial decision not to file charges spurred cries from both sides of the political aisle, with some critics questioning whether the sheriff had correctly interpreted the law. "I have full faith that this truth will prevail to punish this cold-blooded killer who angrily created the altercation that led to Markeis' needless death", Crump continued. (Drejka) would've thought twice before he pulled the trigger. He appears to say something to Jacobs and points to two empty spaces nearby. A man entering the store about 15 feet (5 meters) away stops to look and a woman glances over.

The wounded McGlockton walked back into the convenience store, where he collapsed.

They pointed out that the video shows McGlockton retreating from Drejka after he pushed the man down in an effort to protect Jacobs and his children. They largely became known to the U.S. public during the aftermath of the killing of Trayvon Martin, another case with a black victim and a non-black shooter.

"I'm looking for justice for my son", he said.
