Since James Gunn was sacked from Guardians of the Galaxy 3 over old, highly offensive tweets, fans, friends, and colleagues of the director started petitions, wrote open letters to Disney, and made their feelings over Gunn's firing clear on social media.
Gunn was given a meeting with studio chairman Alan Horn after Gunn's team made a hard push for Disney to give the director a second chance. These dated back to 2010 and 2011 and Gunn published an apology online. And so the conversation will continue about whether terrible years-old jokes should be enough to get someone fired amid a politically-loaded campaign against leftist public figures, and whether the timing of Disney's decision left something to be desired. The studio acted quickly to remove Gunn from directing the third installment, believing the comments were unacceptable in the Me Too era and were not in line with Disney's family-friendly image.
Only hours ago, star Chris Pratt had expressed hope that all parties could strike a compromise and that Gunn could return.
The meeting was said to be "civil and professional", but sources have claimed that Horn will not be changing his stance and they will continue production of Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 without James.
All this is to say that it's been anyone's guess as to how the story might progress, though it shouldn't come as too great a surprise that the evermore powerful Disney would stand its ground despite fan backlash and unrest among its actors.
