According to NFL Network reporter Mike Garafolo, Peterson agreed to a one-year deal with the Skins and he'll get a chance to go up against his former teammates in Week 1 as the Redskins travel to Arizona on September 9 for a matchup against the Cardinals.

After spending time with the New Orleans Saints to begin past year, Peterson was traded to the Cardinals on October 10 for a sixth-round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft.

Peterson was placed on injured reserve for the remainder of the season after suffering a neck injury against the Jacksonville Jaguars in Week 12. Samaje Perine and Byron Marshall suffered ankle injuries in Washington's second preseason game.

Charles was a two-time first-team All-Pro selection in nine seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs, but he played sparingly last season with the Denver Broncos.

Running backs Jamaal Charles, 31, and Orleans Darkwa, 26, also visited with Washington over the weekend. That necessitated signing Peterson and Smith, though coach Jay Gruden gave Kelley a vote of confidence on Sunday.

The Redskins still have Chris Thompson as a pass-catching back, but need someone to help carry the load as a runner. "We've had very unlucky situations with our running backs". If something else happens, we are going to be really, really, really thin. After rushing for 1,485 yards and 11 touchdowns for the Vikings in 2015, Peterson has gained 601 yards and two touchdowns on the ground in 13 games over the past two seasons. "So we just want to make sure we are covering all our bases right now, and we will address it when we feel like we have to". He also earned the Most Valuable Player and Offensive Player of the Year honors in 2012 after rushing for 2,097 yards and 12 touchdowns. That injury brought an early end to Peterson's 2017 season. He underwent surgery in May to remove a stabilizing plate in his leg.
