Nationals won't trade Harper; Dodgers were mystery team

Reports: Cardinals close to acquiring Matt Adams from the Nationals

Cardinals Acquire Matt Adams from Nationals

In an effort to fortify their offense, the Cubs acquired nemesis second baseman Daniel Murphy Tuesday.

According to The Washington Post, Murphy, Adams and Bryce Harper were all claimed by teams.

Cardinals infielder Matt Carpenter is clearly excited to have Adams back, as he tweeted that he is going to "bathe" Adams in his salsa. Because the deal came after the July 31 non-waiver deadline, the Cubs had to win the claim after the Nats put Murphy on revocable waivers before a trade could be completed.

The Nationals entered Tuesday with a 62-63 record, 7 1/2 games back of the Braves in the NL East and 6 1/2 games out of the wild card.
