Despite Trump tweet, Ford says it won't make hatchback in U.S.

Apple chief executive officer Tim Cook earlier this year told US President Donald Trump tariffs "were not the right approach".

In August, Ford announced it had kill its plan to import the new Focus, citing Trump's tariffs on Chinese imports as the reason for the maneuver.

The automaker has already said it has no plans to restart production elsewhere.

Ford stood by its decision.

"It would not be profitable to build the Focus Active in the USA given an expected annual sales volume of fewer than 50,000 units and its competitive segment", Mike Levine, a spokesman for the company, tweeted in response to the president's tweet.

"Apple prices may increase because of the massive tariffs we may be imposing on China", Mr Trump tweeted, "but there is an easy solution where there would be ZERO tax, and indeed a tax incentive".

"Our concern with these tariffs is that the U.S. will be hardest hit, and that will result in lower U.S. growth and competitiveness and higher prices for U.S. consumers", Apple said in a September 5 letter to the Office of U.S. Trade Representative.

In the letter, Apple asks the United States government to "reconsider these measures and work to find other, more effective solutions that leave the USA economy and USA consumer stronger and healthier than ever before".

On July 6, the United States started to impose a 25 per cent tax on $34 billion worth of Chinese imports, including motor vehicles.

In August, China unveiled a proposed list of retaliatory tariffs on $60 billion of US goods ranging from liquefied natural gas to some types of aircraft, should Washington activate the tariffs on its $200 billion list.

However, a Ford spokesman Mike Levine indicated that there isn't a good a business case to build the low-margin, niche model in the U.S.

Trump has criticised China's record trade surplus with the United States, and has demanded that Beijing cut it immediately. "Ford is proud to employ more USA hourly workers and build more vehicles in the US than any other automaker".

The Focus Active was set to be the first Chinese-made Ford offered in the USA, while General Motors now imports the Buick Envision SUV and Cadillac CT6 Plug-In Hybrid. "Apple has highlighted how it sourced over $50 billion of inputs a year ago from its 9,000 USA suppliers across the country". It will continue to sell the vehicle outside the states.
