Woman Got "Black Hairy Tongue" After Car Accident

A 55-year-old woman was taken to the hospital after she sustained serious crash injuries to both legs as a result of a vehicle crash. Eliminating the cause and practicing good oral hygiene are often enough to resolve the issue.

However, within a week after starting the treatment, the woman reported experiencing nausea and having a bad taste in her mouth.

To treat the infection, doctors started her on two separate antibiotics: meropenem and minocycline.

Antibiotics are said to be just one of many factors that can result in black hairy tongue.

A United States woman who developed a odd black discolouration on her tongue as a side-effect of her medication has been successfully treated for the condition.

"Back Hairy Tongue" can also be caused by poor oral hygiene, excessive alcohol consumption and smoking.

Dr. Yasir Hamad, an assistant professor in the Department of Medicine at the Washington University School of Medicine and an author of the report, told CNN that the patient had a "typical textbook case" of the condition.
