'Barca can bid for De Jong, but Ajax won't sell!'

De Jong has told the Ajax management that he wanted to stay at the club this season.

Marc Overmars is certain that Barcelona did not offer Ajax enough money to sign Frenkie De Jong this summer.

Barcelona remain hopeful of landing their man with technical secretary Eric Abidal having held regular conversations with the player's representatives over the past few months.

Reports have further added that Barcelona offered the Eredivisie giants somewhere around 25 to 30 million for their star but was rejected.

Real Madrid are the latest side reportedly interested in him, with Tottenham also planning a move, however, the 21-year-old has made it clear previously that his preference is Barca.

Overmars, the former Arsenal forward, also claimed that Barca's offers were "unfortunate" and that they did not "value De Jong". Ajax insisted he wasn't for sale and confirmed their stance when they rejected bids from both clubs.

The Lilywhites, who ended the summer window without any incomings, have a concrete interest in signing De Jong and are understood to have made contact with Ajax last week.

The newspaper says the 21-year-old is valued at around £35m and Spurs see Chillwell as a long-term replacement for Danny Rose but Leicester City are expected to do all they can to hang on to the left-back.

De Jong's stock has continued to rise in the Netherlands, and he has won two caps for his country, and is closing in on a half-century of appearances for the capital club.

De Jong, who made his senior worldwide debut for Holland earlier this month, played the full 90 minutes as they lost to France in the UEFA Nations League on Sunday evening.
