The 2019 Lexus ES Gets Cameras Instead of Sideview Mirrors, but Only in Japan

Lexus Starts Dropping Traditional Sideview Mirrors For Cameras

The automaker's said it will improve safety, visibility and cabin solitude.

Japanese market versions of the 2019 Lexus ES will be available with digital cameras that replace conventional exterior mirrors.

The new ES will become the first mirrorless production auto when it goes on sale this October. The cameras even automatically adjust their field of focus when a turn signal is activated, or the vehicle is put into reverse.

Of course, this system also allows for slim and futuristic looking "side mirrors" that provide better forward visibility and the reduction of wind noise, due to their smaller surface area.

Here in the USA, the technology has yet to be made legal, though vehicles are already being sold with video screens that replace the center rearview mirror. Another advantage the Digital Outer Mirrors have over their conventional counterparts is that they are shaped to resist the accumulation of raindrops and snow, leaving the driver's view unaffected.

The wing mirrors are replaced with small cameras mounted on the outside of the vehicle, with small screens displaying the feed from these cameras on the inside.

We're surprised it's taken this long for manufacturers to catch on, but Lexus is finally offering digital wing mirrors as an option for the upcoming ES replacement model.
