Amazon Alexa and the Google Assistant are the two most popular personal assistants in the market. The Alexa-powered Amazon Echo lineup of smart speakers and the Google Assistant-powered Google Home speakers dominate the smart speaker market.

Amazon's voice-activated assistant Alexa has a significant presence in consumers' homes, thanks to the robust ecosystem of developers and manufacturers who are incorporating Alexa into their devices.

In fact, around this time past year, Amazon launched its Echo Spot smart speaker, so it comes as no surprise that the online shopping giant is gearing up to announce eight new Alexa-enabled smart home devices, according to CNBC.

Voice assistants have slowly spread from smartphones and smart speakers, landing on computers, cars and much more. All of these products has Amazon's Alexa on some level and can act as a voice assistant. Garmin, too, has an Alexa-compatible dash cam that be used in a auto. Bringing Alexa to more devices fits in with the plans Amazon has outlined for its voice assistant. The amplifier, for example, can be used as the central audio panel to control multiple speakers that are set up across the home. One ongoing criticism of Amazon's Echo, Dot and related smart speakers is that their sound quality isn't great, whereas smart speakers by Sonos Inc., Google LLC's Home Max and even Apple Inc.'s HomePod offer high-fidelity sound, though with a price to match.

At least some of the Alexa-powered devices Amazon is planning could arrive as soon as this month, says CNBC, citing internal documents outlining the company's plans.

If the new devices are made and sold by Amazon, they would be in direct competition with similar devices made by Sonos and Garmin. With eight new Alexa-enabled devices, the company is working along that goal.

Amazon has signaled that it wants Alexa to be in more places than just your bedroom or living room.
