Hurricane Florence’s death toll rises as floodwaters overwhelm region

Typhoon Mangkhut formed farther south in the western Pacific where water is warmer, which gave the typhoon the "perfect environment to intensify".

The death toll from Florence, which came ashore in North Carolina on Friday, rose to 31 on Monday. Officials warned residents to avoid driving around barricades.

The American Red Cross is providing food and shelter to thousands of people who have been displaced by the hurricane, while the Foundation For The Carolinas' Hurricane Florence Response Fund directs funds to nonprofits in North and SC providing relief to victims of the storm.

Flash floods, landslide warnings and "prolonged significant river flooding" throughout the region will continue for the next few days, the National Weather Service (NWS) said.

Officials on Tuesday raised the death toll from the previously reported 20 deaths to 32, according to CBS News, with 25 of those deaths resulting from the storm's devastation in North Carolina, six in SC, and one in Virginia.

The storm dumped more than 8 trillion gallons (30 trillion liters) of rain on North Carolina, the weather service said.

Florence has been downgraded to a tropical depression but continues to pour heavy rain along the East Coast, the National Weather Service reported Monday. More than 347,000 customers, mostly in the Carolinas, were without power on Tuesday morning, according to power companies, down from a peak of almost 1 million outages.
