The woman, identified only as Kate P. of Maricopa County in court documents, alleged that Winston sexually assaulted her on March 13, 2016, when he was a passenger in her vehicle in Scottsdale.

While the Uber driver's lawsuit is meant to hurt Winston financially, he might already be staring down a significant outcome over his suspension from the NFL.

When the allegations became public previous year, the National Football League embarked on a long investigation and determined the story was "consistent and credible".

"I now look forward to putting this behind me and I will continue to work hard every day to be a positive influence in my community and be the best person, teammate and leader I can be".

After an investigation into the incident, the NFL in June suspended Winston for three games for violating the league's personal conduct policy.

'First and foremost, I would like to say I'm sorry to the Uber driver for the position I put you in. "It is uncharacteristic of me and I genuinely apologize", he said. He passed for 417 yards and four touchdowns in the game, easily surpassing all expectations.

"It's nothing", the Tampa Bay quarterback said of the garb after throwing for more than 400 yards and two touchdowns for the second straight week, leading the Buccaneers to a 27-21 victory over the reigning Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday.

Winston is scheduled to return from his suspension after the team's Monday night game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.

It's not the first time Winston, a Heisman Trophy victor at Florida State, has faced allegations of sexual assault. The university settled a Title IX lawsuit over its handling of the allegations with Winston's accuser, Erica Kinsman, in January 2016 for $1.7 million.
