Jimmy Butler requests trade, 76ers could be highly interested

It was thought when the Minnesota Timberwolves acquired Jimmy Butler in a draft-night trade in 2017 that he would expedite the Wolves rebuild, and instantly turn the team into a contender. All three teams have cap space to sign Butler outright next offseason as a free agent.

Jimmy Butler has drawn his line in the sand amid the Minnesota Timberwolves' internal battles and took his situation into his own hands. The result was Butler reportedly requesting a trade to the Nets, Knicks or Clippers. He averaged 22.2 points, 5.3 rebounds and 4.9 assists in Minnesota last season, leading them to the playoffs for the first time since 2004. With that being said, at least one person was happy to hear the news.

Although a previous report suggested Butler was open to signing with the Lakers to play alongside LeBron James, the 14-time All-Star more recently was mentioned as the reason Butler was no longer bullish on joining the storied franchise.

"Any team acquiring Butler would be able to move forward with a maximum extension next summer, with his Bird Rights accompanying him in a trade". Thibodeau is famously, and relentlessly, competitive, and it is hard to envision him being willing to part with a player who embodies everything he values in a player and whom he traded Zach LaVine, Kris Dunn and the No. 7 pick in the 2017 National Basketball Association draft to acquire.

There have also been questions about Butler's relationship with younger teammates Andrew Wiggins and Karl-Anthony Towns.
