New Amazon Echo Dot review: Still small, bigger sound

A few days after Apple held its high-profile unveiling of new iPhones and watches, streaming it on Twitter, Amazon responded by ... sending out several press releases. This is something that has previously been impossible to do with Echo devices. There are new devices too like Fire TV Recast and Alexa smart plugs - and a microwave, yep, a smart microwave. Most of these products will start shipping in October. The new AmazonBasics Microwave comes with dozens of quick-cook voice presets.

Amazon has aggressively signed up hardware partners to make sure smart home-loving consumers could use Alexa to do everything from turning up the heat to turning down the lights.

Not to mention that the microwave itself just looks, well, boring and basic. This is meant to compete with already established devices on the market like Slingbox, TiVo, and HDHomeRun. And it is indeed much more attractive, with a nice fabric cover and an improved speaker. The company also touts the sound will be 70% louder than the current Dot for clearer audio. The Echo Sub is priced at $129.99.

The 3rd-generation Echo Dot comes with a new curved shaped design, and the company moved away from the plastic design to a fabric design.

Finally, Amazon also announced a revamped version of the Echo Plus, which combines the functionality of an Echo speaker with a smart hub. Obviously, the point is to provide better bass while listening to music and other audio.
