World leaders are bracing for President Trump's appearance at the United Nations next week where confrontation is likely to take center stage

Claim of request for talks with Trump is 'farcical', Iran says

In remarks released on Friday, Qassemi rejected US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley's remarks that Trump would consider accepting an Iranian invitation for a bilateral meeting with President Rouhani and said such ridiculous claims are made to create a psychological atmosphere against Iran. At the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit in July, Trump threatened that the United States would "go its own way" if members did not spend more on defense.

President Donald Trump will call for global action on the world drug problem, lay out his vision of the USA role in the world, and urge a halt to the spread of weapons of mass destruction during next week's gathering of world leaders at the U.N. General Assembly.

"Other U.N. member states no longer look to the United States as a natural leader, or even a reliable partner", according to Stewart Patrick, a senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations who served in the George W. Bush administration. In May, Trump pulled Washington out of a 2015 global agreement to put controls on Tehran's nuclear program in exchange for some sanctions relief.

But despite the unpredictable nature of Trump, some diplomats aren't expecting a reality television performance in the Security Council, where almost every member is likely to be represented by their prime minister or president except Russian Federation and China, which are expected to send ministers. "They have exhausted of Trump's my-way-or-the-highway act and are increasingly hitting the road - or looking to China to fill the vacuum left by the US retreat".

That doesn't necessarily mean Trump will be unwelcome at the United Nations, analysts say - just maneuvered around.

But this week, all eyes will be on President Trump.

China summons US ambassador over military sanctions
The official, speaking to Reuters on condition of anonymity, insisted that the sanctions were aimed at Moscow, not Beijing . He warned that the United States would face "consequences" if it did not immediately revoke the sanctions.

"I repeat it once again that the Islamic Republic of Iran has never requested a meeting with Donald Trump", he further stressed.

A senior United Nations diplomat, speaking on condition of anonymity, described the approach of the Trump administration to several foreign policy issues during the past year as "if you want things to change, you've got to cause trouble". A draft concept note for the meeting obtained by ABC News makes no direct mention of Iran, saying the meeting instead will be about how "to counter the spread and use of the world's most risky weapons".

Trump's predecessor, Barack Obama, chaired two Security Council meetings, one in 2009 focusing on nuclear disarmament and another in 2014 on "foreign terrorist fighters". Iran's backing of Shia groups with a propensity for violence - from Lebanon to Syria to Yemen - is destabilizing the Middle East, Trump argues, and must be stopped.

On the world stage in New York, Rouhani will have the opportunity to fire back at the Trump administration and keep Europe from withdrawing their business from the country.

The topic of the meeting will be non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, a broad issue that allows leaders around the horse-shoe table to raise a variety of subjects from North Korea to chemical weapons attacks in Syria and Britain. Last year, Trump drew gasps by threatening from the United Nations podium to "totally destroy" North Korea.
