The primary goal of Sunday's mission was to place the SAOCOM 1A satellite into orbit, but SpaceX also successfully sent a first stage booster back to Vandenberg Air Force Base for the first time.

In the launch, scheduled for shortly after 7:20 p.m., a Falcon 9 rocket will carry the satellite SAOCOM 1A to space.

After it separated from the second stage, the first stage of the Falcon 9 rocket arrested its forward movement, and began falling back toward Earth.

The 30th Space Wing says residents may see multiple engine burns by the first stage and there may be one or more sonic booms.

While SpaceX has launched a rocket from Vandenberg AFB in July, its landing took place on a drone ship in the Pacific Ocean.

A look at Landing Zone 4, SpaceX's newest rocket landing site, at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. "A sonic boom is the sound associated with the shock waves from an aircraft or vehicle traveling faster than the speed of sound". SpaceX founder and CEO Elon Musk warned that the booms "won't be subtle".

SpaceX said it will launch a satellite on a Falcon 9 rocket from Vandenberg. The sound of the boom will depend on weather conditions and other factors.

The satellite's twin, SAOCOM-1B, will also launch on a Falcon 9; its liftoff is targeted for next year.

"SAOCOM-1, together with the Italian COSMO-SkyMed X-Band SAR constellation, comprise the Italian-Argentine Satellite System for Emergency Management (SIASGE), a partnership between CONAE and the Italian Space Agency (ASI)", SpaceX officials wrote in a mission description.
